The Power Sector In Nigeria

Power supply is a critical part in an industrial system and machine. The selection of the power supply will determine the efficiency and reliability of the system. Transcorp Power is one of the most effective power supply systems in Nigeria, asides from the 12 states, which host power stations that generate the power used across the country, are Niger, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Abia, Imo, Ondo, Cross River, Bayelsa, Edo, Kogi, and Delta.

Delta State hosts the 1, 020MW Sapele power station built in 1981, 972MW Transcorp Ughelli power station reportedly built between 1966 and 1990. Transcorp took ownership of the 1000MW capacity plant in 2013 and since then, it has been generating only 160MW of power daily, back to producing at its full 972MW installed capacity. In recent times, Transcorp Power has increased its generating capacity by 525% and plans to grow it to over 3,000MW in the next five years and above. Asides from powering communities and the country at large, Transcorp power fosters the development of the leaders of tomorrow by the Transcorp education initiative which provides a good learning curve and also provides facilities for the youths of the next generation.

In 1978 additional six units of GE Frame 5 gas turbines, like the ones installed in 1975, were added to Delta Power Station (Known as Delta III) to boost the installed capacity to a total of 312MW, as follows: Delta I, 2 X 36 72MW, Delta II, 6 X 20 120MW, Delta III, 6 X 20 120MW making a total of 312MW. The station was upgraded in 1991 with the addition of 6 X 100MW (600MW) GE Frame 9 gas turbines and from 2000 to 2008 Delta II and Delta III GE units were upgraded to 150MW station. The control systems were upgraded to Mark V, a fully computerized control system for Delta II and III. While Delta I was scrapped. Delta IV control system was also upgraded to Mark V.

With continuous development in the power sector, it is safe to say that Transcorp Power is an effective power distribution platform that involves in CSR in the communities in which it resides and also generates equitable and quantitative power supply to the nation.
