Efficient Plant Operations: The GT Startup Process

Our plant follows a precise startup process for our Gas Turbine (GT) to ensure efficient operations. Here’s a simplified overview of the steps involved:

  • Lube, Lift, and Hydraulic Systems: We initiate these systems to prepare the GT, allowing for even heating and shaft stretching.

 

  • Startup Frequency Converter (SFC) Preparation: The SFC gradually increases the shaft’s speed from 100rpm, ensuring a smooth start.

 

  • Natural Gas Introduction: We introduce natural gas into the combustion chamber through gas valves and ignite it using spark plugs.

 

  • Self-Sustaining Speed and Control System Engagement: The GT’s speed ramps up to a self-sustaining level. The control system disengages the SFC and engages the Static Excitation Equipment (SEE) for synchronization.

 

  • Synchronization with the Grid: Once the GT reaches the desired speed, the generator circuit breaker closes, connecting the generator to the grid.

 

Our streamlined startup process ensures efficient and reliable operations, powering the grid with clean energy.

oUR PLANT

Our major raw material is natural gas.

Our primary raw material is natural gas, with a methane content of over 90%. We source our supply from Heirs Energies Limited (HEL) and transport it through the Obigbo-Afam pipeline network operated by the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC).

THE PROCESS

Afam III Fast Power (AFTP)

Our strategic arrangement allows us to efficiently fuel our power plants, particularly Afam Three Fast Power and Afam IV & V. HEL supplies the gas to NGIC at a pressure exceeding 40 bar, ensuring network stabilisation. From the shared manifold at NGIC Afam, we receive a nominal supply to our plants at a pressure above 20 bar.
We leverage this robust supply chain, ensuring a consistent and reliable source of natural gas, enabling us to generate power efficiently and sustainably.
